Colossians 2: Let No One Judge You In Food Or Drink, In Festivals, Or Sabbaths

Paul writes to the Colossian church expressing his concern and gives them encouragement.

His main message is to remain steadfast in Christ, and to not be led astray by deceptive teachings, or the traditions of men.

Paul emphasizes the supremacy of Christ, who holds all wisdom and knowledge, and in whom they find completeness.

Through faith in Christ, they experience spiritual redemption, and victory over the powers of darkness.

He urges them to focus on Christ alone, disregarding human regulations, but instead, finding freedom and growth in their relationship with Jesus.

True wisdom lies in holding fast to Christ, who is the Head of the body, and living in the fullness of His grace and redemption.

Bible Study/Commentary & Verses

Verses 1-3: Paul's Great Conflict, & Desire for Their Encouragement

In these verses, Paul expresses his deep concern for the Colossians, as well as those in Laodicea and others he has not met personally.

His desire is that their hearts may be encouraged, knit together in love, and enriched with a full assurance of understanding concerning the mystery of God.

This mystery is found in both the Father and Christ. In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Note: In the New Testament, the Word Mystery means that something that was unknown in the past, has now been revealed.

Verses 4-7: Warnings Against Deception, & Encouragement to Remain Steadfast

Paul warns the Colossians to be cautious of being deceived by persuasive words and false teachings.

Although he may be physically absent, he is spiritually connected with them and rejoices in their good behavior and steadfast faith in Christ.

He urges them to continue walking in Christ, rooted, and built up, and established in faith as they have been taught, while abounding in thanksgiving.

Verses 8-15: Paul Emphasizes Christ's Supremacy, & Redemption

Paul cautions the Colossians against being deceived by human philosophies and traditions that do not align with Christ.

In Christ dwells all the fullness of the Godhead, and they find completeness in Him, as Jesus is the head of all principalities and power.

Through faith in Christ, they experience a spiritual circumcision, being freed from the sins of the flesh.

Through baptism, they are buried and raised with Christ, and forgiven of their sins.

Christ's victory over principalities and powers is displayed in them.

Verses 16-19: Let No One Judge You In Food Or Drink, In Festivals, Or Sabbaths

Paul tells the Colossians to not let anyone judge them based on food, drink, festivals, or a New Moons, or Sabbaths, as these are only shadows of things to come, but the real substance is in Christ.

He warns against false humility, angel worship, and deviating from Christ.

Instead, they should hold fast to Christ, who is the Head of the body, for their growth and unity come from Jesus.

Verses 20-23: Our Freedom from Worldly Regulations

Paul Q&A the Colossians, about why they subject themselves to worldly regulations, since they have died with Christ to the basic principles of the world.

He warns them against following human commandments, and the doctrines of men, because they have no power to overcome the indulgences of the flesh.

Paul says that self-imposed religion may appear wise, but it does not truly address the issue of overcoming sins.

Colossians  2

Not Philosophy but Christ

For I want you to know what a great conflict I have for you and those in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words. For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

Not The Law, but Christ

11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. 18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.

20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations— 21 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” 22 which all concern things which perish with the using—according to the commandments and doctrines of men? 23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.
